12 Major Implications Of Spider-Man Joining Marvel's Phase 3

12. No More Andrew Garfield (Probably)

It's no surprise that Andrew Garfield's name wasn't on Marvel's official press release for the Spidey announcement: along with Marc Webb he represents Sony's inevitable fall guy for the failed Amazing Spider-Man franchise and drawing a line under his association with the property is a symbolic gesture (as much as it's also a kick in the teeth for him). The chances of Garfield continuing, with the rest of the Spidey universe scrapped are pretty slim, especially as there's a significant hint that Sony want to retain their villains (and something big has to change if only for audience confidence). There is a case to suggest that Marvel might push for Garfield as a means to validate Sony's work, but if the studio don't want to continue Webb's vision for a unified universe, then the second casualty after the director himself will be the flagship talent.
