12 Marvel Movies To Make Phase 4 "Distinctly Different"

6. Runaways

Marvel Comics

What could be more different to the current Marvel climate than introducing a team of teenage characters who defy the wishes of their villainous parents and run off to defeat them and atone for their sins?

A film version of the immensely popular comic was in various stages of production between 2008 and 2013 (when Feige himself confirmed it was dead, but that its script had earned Drew Pearce the Iron Man 3 job). If that script is still on ice, and was good enough to gain Pearce some fans at Marvel's HQ, then it's surely worth a second look?

And Marvel could well score an entirely new audience if they diversify their central character pool, with particular focus on the female members of the Runaways cast, which surely makes good business sense.

The Challenges

The series is already being adapted for TV by Hulu, and that may be a more natural home for it - although it's not clear if it's actually going to be part of the MCU or not. Regardless, it does make a film version far less likely, and that's not to mention the job of establishing a new wing of the universe.

Other stand-alones can see the characters appear in cameos before they make their hard debuts, but the Runaways would effectively be removed entirely (or their parents' existence would become problematic in a world so heavily policed by existing heroes). But that's not so much an impediment as an opportunity to be more creative.
