9. Neo Runs Past A Television Playing The Prisoner TV Series
The idea that Neo - and the rest of humanity - is a prisoner inside the Matrix is central to The Matrix, and his mad dash towards the exit in the final moments of the scene shortly after his epic confrontation with Agent Smith at the train station, can be seen as a frantic rush to escape from this prison. In a blink and you'll miss it moment, Neo runs full pelt past a television in one of the apartments, on which is playing an episode of the classic TV series The Prisoner. A series in which reality was an often unknowable quantity, the reference to this in the context of The Matrix is clear, with Neo almost an alter ego of The Prisoner's central character, Number Six (Neo, after all, is number 1). Who knows if The Prisoner itself will ever be resurrected - back in 2009, none other than Christopher Nolan was reportedly attached to the project.
