12 The Matrix Easter Eggs You Probably Missed

4. The Altered Studio Logo Was A Coded Message Dissing The Studio System

A nice touch for the opening titles is the way in which the Matrix code is overlayed onto the studio logos - for a film about the artifice of reality, it adds another layer to peel back - movies themselves, after all, are artificial constructions which toy with reality as a matter of course. An even deeper meaning can be read in the inclusion of this Matrix effect on the opening logos which speaks to the conflict between creativity and commercial interests. The effect was used quite deliberately as a criticism of the nature of the studio system - likened to the control grid established in the Matrix to keep people in line - and how studio interference can inhibit artistic freedom. Watching the sequels and you can't help but think that, in the end, the studios got their way.
