12 MCU Villains That Were Wasted
7. Malekith
Thor: The Dark World is often seen as the weakest entry in the MCU. Not only does it have a poor script and drab action sequences, the antagonist, Malekith the Accursed, is often regarded as the weakest villain in the franchise.
Considering the Dark Elf wants to blow up the universe for seemingly no reason, Malekith doesn't sound like a particularly compelling character.
What makes Malekith more disappointing is he acts nothing like how he is depicted in the source material. In the comics, the wicked elf has a disturbing sense of humour that makes him more akin to the Joker. He gleefully toys with Thor, regularly taunting him while he destroys everything he loves. For example, when Thor lost his arm, Malekith wore his dismembered limb around his neck like a scarf just to humiliate the god of thunder.
It's possible Malekith's playful manner was toned down since the filmmakers were worried he was too similar to the film's other trickster, Loki. This is a shame since the actor portraying him, Christopher Eccleston, has a talent for portraying cheeky and whimsical characters, so he could've played Malekith accurately to the comics if the character was written better.
