The Scene: Taking place before Clark returns to Metropolis after his absence, his mother, Martha, gives him a few lines of inspiration, including “your father used to say that you were put here for a reason,” and “the world can always use more good reporters.” (0:36)

Why It Would Have Been Awesome: A huge chunk of the film is devoted to Superman’s inner struggle about his return and why he left in the first place. The notion that he was brought to Earth for a reason seems to echo with him throughout the film but we never hear it explicitly stated.

What’s more, considering how important Ma Kent is in Superman’s life, she’s very much relegated to the sidelines for Superman Returns. Her matronly advice doesn’t have much place in a world where Superman is already a fully-formed hero, apparently.

Furthermore, the snippets of conversation would also have been a neat and effective nod to his father, who actually did say that line in the original Superman film.
