Runtime: 84 minutes The first entry in a brilliant series of mockumentaries created by Christopher Guest, which also features the legendary Best in Show, is still one of his finest, in part because of its short duration. Waiting For Guffman is a hilarious character study of small-town thespians with dreams that outsize their provincial lifestyles. Another key factor in this film's enjoyability: we're never meant to look down on these characters. Sure, the director (Guest, in what is still one of his best roles) is a little infantile and his group of amateur performers a tad naive, but that doesn't stop us from rooting for them and their peculiar brand of down-home pageantry.
