There's a school of thought that believes that the best video game-inspired movies, like Crank, the Jumanji reboots and Wreck-it Ralph, aren't even based on games that ever existed. The latest project to put that theory to the test is Ryan Reynolds vehicle Free Guy, which looks to be the kind of high-concept original blockbuster that we don't really see an awful lot of these days.

The plot follows Reynolds' Guy, who discovers that he's an NPC living in a simulated world that comes across like a hybrid of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite, and decides to play the hero for once and save the world after being stuck in a repetitive loop for so long, which sounds more than a little similar to The Lego Movie if we're being honest.

While Shawn Levy's track record as a director doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence, the unique premise offers plenty of scope when it comes to world-building, with the video game setting also clearing the way for a number of inventive set-pieces.

Hopefully Free Guy doesn't turn out to be the type of formulaic family blockbuster that Disney can churn out in their sleep, and makes the most of both Reynolds' undeniable star power and charisma, as well as the sort of killer concept ripe for unbridled creativity that's becoming a rarity in the age of over-familiar franchise movies.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
