5. Top Gun: Maverick (December 23, 2020)

Top Gun has endured as a cult favorite for over 30 years largely because it remains one of the most unashamedly cheesy movies ever made. Very much a product of its time, the countless memorable quotes, inherently ridiculous beach volleyball scene and an iconic soundtrack anchored by the sweet, sweet tones of Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone have never seen it stray far from the public consciousness since 1986.

That being said, Joseph Kosinski's upcoming sequel looks to be an altogether different beast. In a refreshing change from most long-awaited sequels to classics of days gone by, the promo footage doesn't feature any references to the previous movie or self-aware jokes designed to get a laugh out of the fans.

Instead, Top Gun: Maverick is being sold almost entirely on the strength of the jaw-dropping aerial footage, and you know that Tom Cruise didn't just sign on to reprise the role of Pete Mitchell for an easy paycheck, with Hollywood's pre-eminent daredevil set to have plenty of tricks up his death-defying sleeve.

Outside of Mission: Impossible, Jack Reacher is the only other movie of Cruise's entire career to get a sequel, and deciding to return to the world of Top Gun after 34 long years surely means that he's got something special in store.
