9. It Comes At Night – Travis’ Not-So-Sexy Dream
Trey Edward Shults’ post-apocalyptic horror It Comes at Night is an exercise in mounting paranoia and dread. Set in a near-future in which a virus has decimated most of mankind, the film follows a family of three – Paul (Joel Edgerton), Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) and their teenage son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr) – as they attempt to survive by hiding away in a remote house in the woods.
They’re soon joined by fellow survivors Will (Christopher Abbott) and Kim (Riley Keough) who are desperately trying to stay alive along with their toddler son Andrew, and an uneasy alliance forms between the two families. But this is a horror movie and naturally the s**t hits the fan soon enough.
Travis, who is plagued by surreal nightmares throughout the film, develops a little crush on Kim resulting in an initially sexy dream in which a scantily-clad Kim enters his bedroom and kisses him before spewing a gnarly looking black goo (a sure-fire sign of the virus) into his mouth.
Though the scene’s gore is pretty low key, that abrupt shift from sexy to sickening makes it entirely effective horror moment.
