12 Most Dark And Twisted Movie Scenes Of 2018

2. The Bear Scene - Annihilation

Annihilation Natalie Portman
Netflix

Annihilation, Alex Garland's trippy, divisive sci-fi, creates a world of imagined horrors. Whether it's another one of the mutated animals, the alligator/shark, or the stomach being cut open, it's the kind of visual feast designed to make your stomach churn and your eyes close.

None, however, come close to the kind of squirming, edge-of-your-seat, holding-your-breath terror of the bear scene.

It was one thing when the bear briefly appeared to attack Cass and drag her away, but it's another entirely to see it close-up. To have it feel like it can see you. The searing tension gradually rises until you can no longer, er, bear it. The way it stalks around the house, and leaves you begging the others to stay quiet, is horrific. The sight of its mutated, ungodly visage; its terrifying, broken, bear-meshed-with-human skull, snarling and salivating at the prospect of fresh meat. The stench of death and fear you can almost sense through the screen. And then there's the sound. The pained, human screams coming from inside, and the realisation of what that means. A noise you'll not stop hearing for long after the credits roll.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
