3. The First Dance - Suspiria

While the original Suspiria jumped straight into its cartoon-coloured violence, Luca Guadagnino's decidedly different remake makes you wait for the first bit of bloodshed. As a result, the first major death is as unexpected as it is totally repulsive.
All of the ballet scenes in Suspiria are shot with a manic energy, attempting to capture the physicality of performances which threaten to devolve into something resembling a kind of primal, uncontrolled form of possession. However this time, the majesty of main character Susie's just-about-controlled body moves are juxtaposed with another girl, Olga, trapped in a performance room in another part of the school, being horrifically murdered by a supernatural force.
Initially it's not all that explicit, as the other dancer is launched into the glass panels on the walls like something out of Paranormal Activity. As Susie's performance becomes more unhinged though, Olga's body starts to contort, break and swell unnaturally, with her entire frame morphing into this grotesque shape that barely seems human by the end. Each snap is more painful than the last, with only the sounds of this long, drawn-out death punctuating the soundtrack.
After all this punishment she doesn't die either, instead forced to wallow in her pain and unable to move a single bone in her body (not that she has many left that aren't broken).
