12 Most Desperate Oscar Grab Movies Of 2016

7. Sully

Silence Oscar
Warner Bros.

Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks Sully tells the real-life tale of Chesley Sullenberger, the airline captain who successfully crash-landed a passenger jet on the Hudson River back in 2009 in an incident that’s come to be known as the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’.

Now, Eastwood is no stranger to the Academy Awards having won Best Director twice for Unforgiven and Million Dollar Baby and neither is two-time Best Actor winner Hanks. Combine that with a plot revolving around a real-life hero and ‘miracle’ and you can almost hear the scratch of the pen as Eastwood and Hanks write the first draft of their acceptance speech.

There could be a few obstacles standing in the way of that golden statuette, however. Firstly, it’s a relatively brief film at just over an hour and half long and we all know how much the Academy likes its epically long movies. Secondly, Eastwood expressed his support for soon to be POTUS Donald Trump which may not sit so well with Hollywood’s more liberal leaning Oscar voters. Looks like only time will tell if Sully can score either director or star an Oscar hat trick.
