12 Most Hopeless Sci-Fi Movie Endings
2. The Fly (1986)
The Fly is undoubtedly one of the best things David Cronenberg has ever done. Plus, it is the perfect mixture of creepy-crawly horror, science fiction, and a big dollop of romance that actually might make you shed a tear or two.
Firstly, the movie is pretty gruesome in parts, so don't watch if you can't handle a bit of gore. Secondly, the ending of the film is extremely bleak and somehow manages to turn the stomach-churning events of before into a tragic love story between scientists Seth (Jeff Goldblum) and girlfriend Ronnie (Geena Davis).
The movie starts with Seth telling Ronnie that he's working on something pretty cool. The word "cool" is an understatement as Seth is actually busy creating abnormal animals by fusing two separate species together. As expected, Seth turns himself into a creature but no it's not a lion, an elephant, nor is it a rhino or an eagle. It's a fly. In Seth's defense, it was by accident.
In the beginning, Ronnie proves that not everything is about looks and that she is still actually kind of into him. However, the more fly-like he gets, the more Ronnie wants to check out. Sadly, Ronnie eventually proves that the world is a superficial cesspit and blows Seth's brains out with a shotgun. It seems love doesn't conquer all.
