12 Most Hopeless Sci-Fi Movie Endings

11. A Clockwork Orange (1971)

A Clockwork Orange
Warner Bros. Pictures

Based on the book of the same name, A Clockwork Orange is Stanely Kubrick's crowning jewel and one that manages to both depress audiences but also educate them on the state of the world today.

The movie follows the actions of Alex (played by the brilliantly scary Malcolm McDowell) and his fellow droogs who terrorize the streets of their neighborhood. They rape, they pillage, they beat up anyone that gets in their way, all because they can.

Soon enough, Alex is arrested and is offered the chance to complete a new form of treatment that may get him out of going to prison. Alex agrees and undergoes numerous exercises that force him to watch violence associated with extreme feelings of nausea. The treatment is so strenuous that Alex attempts to kill himself. The government is terrified that their strange underground activities will be found out so they attempt to turn Alex evil again and cover the whole thing up.

In the end, we never truly know whether Alex is cured or not. The worst thing about it is that we end up caring about Alex, we feel sorry for him even though we earlier saw him brutally raping a woman while singing, "Singin' in the rain." Instead, we are treated to a very real vicious satire on youth culture and how the government can seemingly get away with anything.
