12 Most Hopeless Sci-Fi Movie Endings

5. Twelve Monkeys (1995)

A Clockwork Orange
Universal Pictures

Twelve Monkeys is everything you would want from a science-fiction dystopian daydream. It has time travel, it has Bruce Willis, it has Terry Gilliam at the helm, and it has a deadly virus that ends up wiping out the majority of the population. Heck, it even has Brad Pitt!

The movie centers around the prisoner, Cole (Willis) who is sent on a mission by a group of scientists to try and figure out what caused the virus and if they can make a cure. Cole is transported back in time but unlike other time travel movies, it is made clear that Cole is unable to change the past but instead has a chance at helping the future.

In the end, it is suggested that the future may be restored and protected from the virus, however, that doesn't stop the billions and billions of people from dying.

So, not only does this movie have the worst time machine ever it also indicates that even if there were a killer virus and a machine that enabled people to travel through time to stop billions from dying, it still wouldn't be good enough.
