12 Most Insulting Changes To Movie Remakes
1. Maleficent (2014) - Turning Stefan Into A Rapist
Yeah, this happened.
Aside from the obvious focus on Maleficent over Aurora, this was actually a pretty hyped movie with many looking forward to a new take on the classic story of the original film.
In the end, the film looked beautiful and had some great moments, but overall fell completely flat with some curious choices that might possibly be the reason Disney doesn't take any bold chances with the all their other remakes nowadays. Far and away the boldest choice this film made though was turning King Stefan into a fantasy rapist.
The original King Stefan is a kind, just ruler who by all accounts seems like a decent bloke despite his limited screen-time. He came across as our typical Disney King only being distinguished by the fact he's first one to not have grey hair.
In this edgy Sleeping Beauty remake where Maleficent is simply a misunderstood anti-hero, he's an evil, tyrannical ruler with all the charm of a foot verruca who deceives Maleficent to become the true villain of the film. In a painfully awkward scene, Stefan meets up with his childhood friend Maleficent to hang out, then drugs her so she falls asleep and cuts off her wings.
Essentially, it's a dark, metaphorical rape scene in a Disney movie.
Stefan was already a pretty weak villain, especially with an over the top Sharlto Copley rocking an awful accent portraying him, and this unneeded scene made him an irredeemable villain and rightly got a large amount of criticism upon release.
