12 Most Rewatchable Movie Sequels Of All Time
10. Evil Dead 2
Sam Raimi’s feature film debut The Evil Dead was a punch in the jaw for American horror the year it was released. Surrounded by countless paint-by-numbers slashers hastily produced in the post-Friday the 13th boom, The Evil Dead was grim, brutal, and bloody. So, so bloody.
Praised by Stephen King himself as the movie that defined American horror for years to follow, it inspired innumerable knock-offs both big and small budget, none of which could come close to matching the vicious intensity of the original. So, a hard feat for the director to repeat.
Which is why Raimi took another route entirely, making Evil Dead II a silly, cartoonish (if still plenty bloody) horror comedy, keeping the scares but adding in a bizarre Three-Stooges-style penchant for slapstick. Centred around a peerless performance from Bruce Campbell, the movie was a hilarious and somehow still-scary rollercoaster ride which obliterated pre-release expectations and went on to become a formative work in the horror comedy subgenre.
