12 Most Rewatchable Movie Sequels Of All Time
9. Scary Movie 3
The first two Scary Movie films were… Well, the kindest thing to say is “an easier act to follow” than most of this list. Unfocused spoofs of horror trends, both movies relied on Farrelly Brothers-esque gross out and lowbrow stoner humour for laughs.
For the first film the formula worked fine, as the screenwriters snuck in a few clever satirical barbs aimed at the late nineties post-ironic slasher revival beneath the buckets of jizz jokes. A game cast didn’t hurt, and while the film was mostly carried by Anna Faris’ hilarious starring performance, it’s nonetheless fondly remembered.
The sequel, which tried to parody then-popular haunted house flicks, fared worse. Painfully unfunny, it flopped hard with critics despite the presence of Tim Curry, David Cross, and Chris Elliot.
When the directorial reigns of the franchise were handed over to Airplane! auteur David Zucker, the franchise was back on track. Taking satirical shots at everything from Signs to Michael Jackson, the sequel provided an actual storyline sorely lacking from the last instalment, improving the movie massively. It’s no Naked Gun, but Scary Movie 3 remains a well-loved horror spoof, as well as a pretty funny time capsule back to 2003.
