9. Spider-Man's Unexpectedly Large Role - Captain America: Civil War
The Revelation: Spider-Man (Tom Holland) actually has a surprisingly meaty role in Civil War, appearing for a lengthy chat with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) out of costume, and then showing up during the iconic airport battle to help out Team Iron Man.
Why It Was Surprising: Because the big word ahead of the movie's release was that Peter Parker would only have a cameo, and possibly not even appear in costume.
Then that trailer released showing Parker in costume, but even so, most expected he'd just randomly show up at the battle out of nowhere and quickly get knocked out or disappear for some reason.
Again, nope. Marvel Studios did a fantastic job keeping the nature and size of Spidey's role under wraps, as he gets to interact with a bunch of The Avengers and basically steals away the movie's biggest set-piece.
In short, this was much more substantial than most sensible fans were expecting.
