12 Most Underrated 2000s Sci-Fi Movies

1. Southland Tales

The 6th Day
Universal Pictures

In 2005, the world waited with baited breath to see what the indie auteur behind surprise smash Donnie Darko would do next. The answer, we now all know, is this disastrous satire/ sort of dystopia/ sci fi dramedy which brought together a sprawling ensemble cast including Sarah Michelle Gellar, the Rock, and Justin Timberlake(!) in an incomprehensible story involving the apocalypse, some sort of surveillance, and World War III.

Oh, and it was set in the far flung future of… 2008.

Time hasn’t been kind to the flop, since the subjects of its satire—America’s endless middle eastern wars, its shamelessly overzealous patriotism, its celebrity worship and mindless pop culture—are all now irrelevant, and so… wait a second.

Maybe this cluttered but often hilarious and surprisingly incisive satire is overdue a reconsideration after all…
