No doubt horror fans the world over collectively groaned at the thought of yet another zombie apocalypse movie but believe it or not The Girl with All the Gifts actually manages to breathe a bit of much-needed fresh air into a well-trod and trope-filled genre.

Adapted from Marvel Comics writer Mike Carey’s novel of the same name (which he actually wrote in tandem with the screenplay), it’s set in a near-future Britain in which most of the population has been wiped out by a fungal virus that turns them into mindless, flesh-hungry shells of their former selves.

Hope exists in the form of a generation of hybrid, semi-sentient zombie kids who although cannibalistic have retained the ability to think and feel and are kept at an army compound where the cold Dr Caroline Cardwell (Glenn Close) experiments on them to find a cure and sympathetic teacher Helen (Gemma Arterton) attempts to treat them humanely.

Thought-provoking and beautifully shot without skimping on the scares or gore, it’s the type of film we see so rarely – a zombie movie with real brains.
