12 Most Underrated Movies Of 2017

8. Ingrid Goes West

Brawl In Cell Block 99 Vince Vaughan
Neon

A delightfully dark satire for the age of social media obsession, Ingrid Goes West stars Aubrey Plaza as a lonely, unstable young woman who after the death of mother, a public meltdown and a brief stint at a mental hospital cashes in her mother’s inheritance and heads out west to Los Angeles to ‘befriend’ – or rather, stalk – the Instagram star (Elizabeth Olsen) she has an unhealthy fixation on.

Distributed by newcomers Neon, the movie was given an August dump month release which kind of makes sense since Neon had slightly bigger fish to fry in the form of a couple of movies they’d paid bigger sums to acquire – namely Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal and Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya – but meant that Ingrid Goes West never really gained audience traction.

Nevertheless, it’s a deliciously twisted takedown of vapid social media cultures with brilliant comedic turns from Plaza and Olsen that’s perfect for anyone who’s questioned whether our preoccupation with social media might be just a little unhealthy.
