12 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Remakes Ever
11. Death Race
Start your engines folks, because we’re once again defending the controversial career of Resident Evil helmer Paul W.S Anderson (don’t worry, we tear apart Alien Vs Predator in an upcoming article). Yes, he may only be the second-best director with his name in this generation. But the Event Horizon director doesn’t deserve the hate piled on his offerings, as evidenced by the critical roasting heaped on this 2008 remake of Roger Corman’s 1975 grindhouse dystopia Death Race 2000.
Starring Guy Ritchie muse/ toughest Englishman alive Jason Statham, Death Race is a tense revenge flick, a gratifyingly gory and fast-paced action thriller unashamed of its R-rating, and even a pretty solid satirical indictment of reality TV culture in the twilight of Bush Jr-era America. Is it as daring as Corman’s original? Come on—no major studio will hit that level of shock value, but this remake is still worth a watch as a more mainstream remix of the same satirical targets.
