12 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movie Remakes Ever
10. Solaris
Well, the good news for Sex, Lies, and Videotape director Steven Soderbergh is that Stanislaw Lem, the author of the original source novel of the same name, disliked his version of Solaris as much as he disliked the original adaptation by Stalker director Andrei Tarkovsky. Technically this one is less of a direct remake and more a new reimagining of the same source material, a trippy and meditative journey through the mind of a lone space station-stationed psychologist orbiting the eponymous planet.
George Clooney puts in a more silent and sombre turn than usual in the central role and Cliff Martinez’s dreamy score provides a perfect aural accompaniment to the flick’s slow, strange tone. Critics and audiences were turned off by the film’s challenging ambiguity, but upon a revisit the film is as solid an exploration of this complex territory as the original Tarkovsky film, and its influence can be seen in more recent genre headf***s such as Duncan Jones’ Moon.
