Long before the much-maligned Dark Universe was laughed out of theatres with Tom Cruise’s mega-budget version of The Mummy (only to be quickly rehabilitated with Leigh Wannell’s tense Elizabeth Moss vehicle The Invisible Man), Mighty Joe Young helmer Joe Johnson had offered us an early glimpse of the potential that big budget, gory re-imaginings of the classic movie monsters held.

Anchored by a typically great and underrated performance from Benicio del Toro, this atmospheric chiller benefits from a foggy Victorian London setting which brings to mind the likes of From Hell and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and some suitably over-the-top melodramatic theatrics from Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins. The film isn’t perfect—Rick Baker perfected the werewolf transformation pre-CGI, thank you very much—but it’s an effective slice of gory, action-packed horror drama which went largely unseen despite its massive budget.
