7. The Day The Earth Stood Still
2008 may have been a bit too early for this sci-fi
thriller remake—as Keanu Reeves’ emotionless Klaatu informs humanity at large
that they’ve made a mess of their home planet and as such their time has come, it’s
surprisingly reminiscent of the doomsaying we hear from climate scientists on a
regular basis these days. Sure, global warming and climate change existed earlier
than a decade or so ago (despite what Trey Parker and Matt Stone thought at the
time), but the urgency of this remake’s eco-apocalypse is far more relevant and
resonant when revisited now.
The film itself isn’t the dour affairs critics wrote it off as, with some dazzling special effects and inventive ideas injected into the existing template offered by the vintage fifties original. It’s a good thing director Scott Derrickson went on to helm the hugely successful Sinister after this flick was unfairly maligned—here’s hoping his career will be smooth-sailing from hereon out. Now to take a sip of coffee and read about the status of that Dr. Strange sequel…
