12 Movie Idiots Who Basically Created Their Own Villains

12. Hammond Is The Worst Boss - Jurassic Park

John Hammond - Jurassic Park
Universal

Perhaps because of the casting of cuddly Santa Claus, Richard Attenborough, the character of John Hammond was given a heroic realignment in comparison to the book, where he's far more of a corporate jerk who ends up being eaten by his creations. In the source, he's far more driven by his own impulses to become great, with some short-cuts along the way to make himself richer, and a hangover of some of that actually remains in the film, despite his more pleasant demeanour.

The most notable example comes in his treatment of Dennis Nedry, who is clearly a reprehensible character, but who gets ridiculously short shrift from his boss when he attempts to bring up financial grievances. The boss bats away his problems as his own problems, ignoring the first rule of morale-building in the workplace, implying that their relationship has devolved (which is explored far more in the book, as Nedry is basically shown as being abused by both Hammond and InGen to the point that he snaps.)

A bit more time spent supporting his staff and Hammond wouldn't have had to give up on his dream, or live with the fact that he almost sent his grandkids off to be dino-bait.
