11. Unbreakable (2000)
Buena Vista PicturesAfter the critical and commercial adulation that greeted his theatrical debut The Sixth Sense, M. Night Shyamalan's follow-up followed much the same path. This time, instead of putting a new spin on the ghost story the wunderkind director opted to add his signature twist to the superhero genre. Despite constant rumblings over the last decade, Unbreakable 2 seems unlikely to ever see the light of day. The movie saw Bruce Willis give a subtle and restrained performance as David Dunn, who comes to realize that he possesses superhuman abilities, and inadvertently finds himself a nemesis in the guise of Samuel L. Jackson's Elijah Price, complete with the supervillain moniker of 'Mr. Glass'. An atmospheric and suspenseful thriller, with the premise surrounding Willis' character established there were endless possibilities for the much-rumored sequel. Despite grossing almost $250m at the box office and selling millions of copies on home video, the studio were unwilling to greenlight a sequel for financial reasons given Unbreakable's $75m budget. In the intervening years Shyamalan, Willis and Jackson have all expressed interest at one time or another, but the quality of the director's recent output indicates that any potential follow-up could end up being completely botched anyway.
