10. Big Trouble In Little China (1986)
20th Century FoxBig Trouble in Little China is an undisputed cult classic, a tongue-in-cheek action flick that proudly wears its B-movie inspirations on its sleeve. Essentially a Western with Eastern influences, the uniquely bizarre movie features action, comedy, horror and romance with Kurt Russell at his charismatic best as Jack Burton. Unfortunately, the movie was a box office disaster and earned just over $11m against a $20m budget, with audiences not quite sure what to make of it. Although its reputation has only grown over the years, the failure of Big Trouble in Little China saw director John Carpenter abandon the studio system entirely. Which was a real shame, as the final shot of Jack driving away with one of Lo-Pan's creatures in tow beautifully set things up for a sequel. Perhaps if the Carpenter/Russell team had known how popular the movie would be almost 30 years on things could have been different, but this is sadly one sequel we'll never see. Earlier this year, it was announced that a Big Trouble in Little China comic book series would be released, continuing the mythology and picking up right where the movie ended. Available now, it serves as a reminder of the potential that a Big Trouble franchise could have had. That ship has unfortunately sailed, with so much time having elapsed that John Carpenter himself is starting to eerily resemble Lo-Pan...
