8. The Last Boy Scout (1991)
Warner Bros. The Last Boy Scout is one of the most underrated action comedies of the 1990's, with director Tony Scott adding his signature visual flair to a typically witty Shane Black script, bolstered by the chemistry between mismatched duo Damon Wayans and Bruce Willis, with the latter giving one of the best performances of his career as world-weary private eye Joe Hallenbeck. Shane Black sold his script for the movie for a hefty $1.75m, which was a record at the time. Featuring all of the snappy dialogue and character moments synonymous with his work, the final product is often unfairly overlooked when discussing the high points of the buddy-movie genre. Loaded with one-liners, gunfights and car chases, The Last Boy Scout ended with Hallenbeck and Wayans' Jimmy Dix becoming partners in what was an obvious set up for further adventures. However, the movie greatly underperformed at the box office given the talent assembled, grossing less than $60m domestically against a $29m budget. There were also stories of disharmony on set, with Tony Scott being pressurized by Willis and producer Joel Silver into making changes during the production. In a world where Bruce Willis continues to make terrible Die Hard movies, its a real shame that The Last Boy Scout never even had a chance at getting a sequel.
