12 Movies That Could Have Had Awesome Sequels

7. True Lies (1994)

True Lies20th Century FoxAlthough by no means his best movie, True Lies could very well be James Cameron's most entertaining. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the spy caper delivers several incredible action sequences and plenty of humor, with a never-better Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role ably supported by a Golden Globe-winning performance from Jamie Lee Curtis. Back in the days when James Cameron would actually release movies on a semi-regular basis, True Lies marked his final effort before his sojourn into the Oscar-bothering and box office domination of Titanic and Avatar. Directed with supreme confidence, the movie sees Arnie dance the tango, ride a horse through a building and commandeer a Harrier jet in amongst the myriad of memorable supporting characters and international espionage. The movie ends with the husband-and-wife team now working together for the same spy organization, in an obvious piece of sequel-baiting. There had been rumors of a sequel to True Lies for years, which is hardly surprising given the $378.8m box office total (over $600m adjusted for inflation) and enthusiastic reception to the movie. However, the 9/11 attacks led to James Cameron changing his position on making a follow-up, saying an action comedy about terrorism wouldn't be funny in the current climate. A real shame for a movie that had plenty of possibilities for a sequel, although Tom Arnold is probably still waiting by the phone...

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
