5. Bad Boys II (2003)
Columbia PicturesMichael Bay has released five movies in the last seven years, four of which have come from his time at the helm of the Transformers franchise. While these movies continue to do massive box office business, they aren't very good. The director sought to recharge his batteries with the $25m Pain & Gain, but perhaps a move away from the CGI histrionics of Optimus Prime and co. could lead the director back to the franchise that launched his career. His feature-length debut Bad Boys was a massive breakthrough, grossing $141m against a $19m budget and giving a huge boost to the careers of stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Returning for a sequel in 2003, Bad Boys II sees the director at his Michael Bay-iest; delivering an unrelenting barrage of spectacular action sequences that completely ignore plot, character and logic in favor of witty banter and explosions. Maybe that sounds like a bad thing, but Bad Boys II is one of the most gleefully entertaining action movies ever made, despite its many shortcomings. Rumors of Bad Boys III have cropped up every couple of years, with Jerry Bruckheimer saying as recently as this month that the story is being worked on. Let's face it, Michael Bay needs to get away from Transformers and get back to what he's best at; blowing s**t up without the CGI overload. Will Smith could use a hit to restore his fading reputation, and Martin Lawrence probably isn't busy. Sure, Bad Boys III won't win any Academy Awards, but it could be a damn good action flick.
