12 Movies Based On Real Life Serial Killers

9. The Boston Strangler (1968)

Starring Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda, The Boston Strangler is an underrated serial killer film. Following the strangulation of three women, Boston police set off to find a serial killer before he strikes again. After DeSalvo's capture and interrogation, he learns that he's living with a split personality disorder.

Interestingly enough, a movie based on the Boston Strangler called simply The Strangler was released four years prior, before DeSalvo confessed. This is the only strangler film to feature DeSalvo aside from 2008's The Boston Strangler: The Untold Story.

Critics praised Curtis' role as DeSalvo and generally consider this to be a decent true-crime drama. Controversy surrounded this case for years, as many thought that either DeSalvo was lying about committing the murders or that some of the victims didn't belong to him. DNA evidence uncovered in 2013 confirms that he was at least responsible for one of the victims. With experts believing that he "most likely" committed the other crimes, it's a surprise that a filmmaker hasn't attempted to produce a modern version chronicling The Boston Strangler.
