With J.J. Abrams hard at work on post-production for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Rian Johnson confirmed to be directing Episode VIII, there's currently an empty slot open for Episode IX, which going by the expected release pattern will be hitting cinemas in 2019. Nolan would no doubt be a fascinating pick for the final entry into the trilogy, and given how impressively he wrapped up the Dark Knight saga (for the most part), he's proven beyond any doubt his chops at bringing closure to a big-screen franchise. In reality, the 2019 release date would likely ensure it wasn't in fact Nolan's next film: it would at least give him time to release another film if he wanted to, yet if he just wanted to relax and perfect pre-production on Episode IX, then he would have over 3 years to do that and learn from Abrams and Johnson's experience on the series. How Likely Is It?: Not at all, really. When asked about directing a Star Wars movie, Nolan said, "As far as whether or not I would have ever done , the truth is I think Id be afraid to touch it! boldly going where he went before in Star Trek, and it takes colossal balls." He also added that he preferred to do "his own thing" rather than "carrying the weight and expectation of the entire world", and it's also unlikely he'd want to work from Rian Johnson's treatment rather than write his own script. Few can argue with that: making a Star Wars movie brings with it a whole other world of pressure that even his Batman movies couldn't begin to measure up to. He would have been an interesting choice, but short of Nolan seeing Episode 7 and having a major change of heart, it's just not going to happen. 2/10.
