12 Movies Christopher Nolan Should Make Next

6. A Low-Budget Thriller

Considering how massive Nolan's movies have gone in terms of both cosmic scale and budget, it'd be great seeing him return to his roots, to the sort of project that earned him his first significant acclaim (including a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination) and clout as a filmmaker, 2000's magnificent thriller Memento. The $5 million movie proved the importance of ideas and imagination over money (and netted an impressive $40 million worldwide), and to see Nolan crafting another heady, smart, visceral thriller would be a welcome riposte to any claims that he's "sold out" as a filmmaker (which he absolutely hasn't). How Likely Is It?: Much like the low-budget sci-fi suggestion, it would be a huge surprise to see Nolan work on such a cheap film, so it's probably more realistic to see a thriller budgeted in the $40-50 million range (consider that Insomnia cost $46 million), which again can still be considered relatively low-budget for a director of Nolan's exuberance. It's possible for sure, though one suspects Nolan might just stick with high-budget filmmaking for the foreseeable future. 5/10.
