12 Movies From 2015 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring

7. American Ultra

The Promise Stoner spies! Like Drive, American Ultra boasted a twist (given away by the marketing) that changed the entire tempo midway through in favour of lots of violence. And the chance to see Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart playing multi-layered characters in an oddball situation was always going to be appealing. The Problem Unfortunately, American Ultra is a horrible mish-mash that seems too confident of the appeal of its violence and undercooks the comedy that should have been a more integral part. Neither Eisenberg nor Stewart seem particularly challenged (which is always problematic for actors who already attract accusations of lazy performances) and the script just isn't as clever or as witty as it seems to think it is. And there's definitely flashes of an identity crisis that would have been solved by pushing the action or the comedy more.
