12 Movies From 2015 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring
4. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation
The Promise More high-octane thrills from the Man Who Doesn't Age (And Also Does All Of His Own Stunts). This time a new anti-spy agency appears (not Spectre, so don't even try saying it) to take down Ethan and his friends who will be forced into unprecedented action to save their skins and preserve their way of life. The Problem Yes, it made lots of money and there were some impressive set-pieces, but the Mission Impossible franchise is becoming too much of a saturated market. It might seek to outdo itself by having Ethan hang off increasingly improbable things in mid-air, but the plotting is far from as smart as the first film (or indeed the TV show) and the villains appear to just be trotted out as cannon fodder in case anyone accidentally steals focus from Hunt. The biggest problem is that no matter how high the stakes are supposedly raised, you never get the sense that either Hunt or any of his specialist operative friends (who mostly stand around watching him do daring things) will ever be under any real threat. And all that leads to is a spectacle heavy on bluster but short on real satisfaction.
