12 Movies In 2016 That Should Have Flopped (But Didn't)

7. The Angry Birds Movie

A movie based on a mobile game app in which the goal is to destroy as many egg-stealing pigs as possible by launching birds at them doesn’t exactly sound like the most promising premise for a feature-length movie. But seasoned animators and first-time directors Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly did the impossible and managed to stretch the video game into an actual plotline and despite many a scathing review potentially hampering its success, The Angry Birds Movie went on to gross $349.7 million in box office sales against its $73 million budget.

As Warcraft has proven, 2016 has been a pretty good year for video game to movie adaptations and The Angry Birds Movie now boasts claim to the title of second highest grossing video game movie of all time after Warcraft. Obviously, the bar within that genre isn’t set too high but despite its naysayers, Angry Birds did feature some great animation and voice acting. A sequel is reportedly already in the works.
