The Foreshadowing

As everyone who has watched more than a couple of Star Trek episodes knows, the red shirts on the Enterprise (or any of the other ships or stations) are the expendable characters. They don't even get names. It's such a notorious trope, in fact, that it's lampooned in Galaxy Quest to great effect.

So when Chekov was forced to put on a red shirt in Star Trek Into Darkness, it looked like he was doomed. He even seemed to be aware of the trope himself since he looked horrified.

What Actually Happened...

It wasn't Chekov who ended up dying, as Captain Kirk flipped expectations and sacrificed himself temporarily to save the ship and his crew. It lasted all of a few minutes until some tribble blood nonsense saved him. Chekov made it to the end alive and well.
