4. Asami Is A Ghost - Audition

Audition's ending may now be pretty notorious as a modern video nasty, but at the time of first watching it, it seemed to be setting up an entirely different film. It essentially begins as a gentle romantic film with the enigmatic Asami and Aoyama falling in love.

But then when Asami disappears abruptly, it feels like she was being set up as a ghost all along thanks to her all-white appearance, his friends noticing that something isn't right with her and her references not actually existing. It definitely looks like that sort of haunting is in play.

What Actually Happened...

The twist is far more grounded and arguably even more scary. Asami definitely exists, but she's wildly removed from reality thanks to her burning need for completely devoted love. Instead of a ghost she's a limb-chopping murderer with a penchant for grotesque violence and mutilation. But at least she gets her comeuppance in the end.
