12 Movies That Wasted Great Twist Ideas
5. Serenity— Their Lives Are Actually Just A Video Game
Here's an un-controversial, stone cold take:
Last year's Serenity was already a fairly sub par romantic drama before it was revealed that the cast were, in fact, characters in a video game unbeknownst to themselves.
Here's a more controversial stance:
This isn't necessarily a bad twist.
Just as The Truman Show pulled off the potentially absurd premise of a man whose entire life is a TV series, Serenity could have foreshadowed its big twist by having the film's universe be plagued by technical difficulties and strange inconsistencies, the sort of subtle hints which could have tipped viewers off to its real nature.
Rather than helming the flick as a maudlin melodrama and then dropping the laughable bombshell out of nowhere, the filmmakers could have given Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConnaughey's underwritten characters a string of clues to their true nature. Hey, maybe even go full Truman and reveal the twist to the audience at the start of the film, so the characters are the only ones unaware of their "reality".
