During a mission, several astronauts find an extra-terrestrial cell on a space probe. This microorganism, who is nicknamed "Calvin", can change into any form of cell, making its potential theoretically unlimited. But when Calvin mutates into a multi-celled organism, it starts killing the crew. When they see how quickly this creature evolves, they do everything in their power to stop it reaching Earth, knowing it could cause untold destruction.
One of the astronauts, Jordan, lures the alien in an escape pod and then asks his co-worker, North, to bounce her pod off his, hurling him and Calvin into space while sending her pod to Earth. North seemingly succeeds in this plan, causing her pod to crash-land in a lake in Vietnam.
As a group of fishermen make their way toward the pod, we realise that North made a miscalculation. It turns out that she accidentally sent North's pod to Earth and cast her own into deep space.
As the fishermen look into the vessel, they can see Jordan, who has been enveloped by the alien, screaming at them not to open the door. Although it isn't shown, we can assume that the locals activated the pod's hatch, releasing Calvin and thus, dooming humanity.
