Obviously, we've already seen a major hint that Batman has lost a Robin, thanks to the grim trophy he keeps in his Batcave, so we're effectively in the timeline beyond this story's point. But there's no reason the stand-alone Batman film actually has to follow a linear timeline.

The hints of Batman's pain in Batman v Superman actually represented the most intriguing unexplored narrative point in the entire film. Clearly it was meant to be suggestive - the idea that Batman was haunted - and you have to think it will come back in a big way in the future.

Affleck's Batman could jump back to before Batman v Superman - ensuring that there's no question of him just calling the JL to help him out with major threats - to tell that story. And while it was no more than a publicity stunt, the idea of watching Batman face off with this particularly violent Joker and suffer such a massive loss is a remarkably compelling one.

Yes, so it's another DC Downer movie, but without Snyder to heavy-hand it, it could be incredibly special.
