12 Pointless Subplots In Otherwise Awesome Movies
7. Spock & Uhura Are A Couple...Totally Out Of Nowhere - Star Trek
By most accounts J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek movie was a highly entertaining reinvention of the classic sci-fi franchise, though the left-field decision to make Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana) lovers was nothing if not totally eyebrow-raising.
Though the film at least doesn't devote numerous scenes to the pair's romance, it does feel rather out-of-place to see Uhura being so intimate with Spock, even if it is admittedly after the destruction of his home planet, Vulcan.
This definitely softens the irritation and weirdness a little, but even sewing the seeds here for a rather dull, equally pointless romance in the two sequels just feels like it was executive-mandated.
As if Abrams didn't already do enough to irk more hardline Trekkies, he decided to screw with the ship's relationship dynamic for no reason at all, other than that the only female member of the main crew couldn't possibly just be, you know, single.
