As said before, Harry's circumstances before receiving his Hogwarts admissions letter were incredibly key to both the story, and the development of the young boy's character. With no family but the aunt and uncle that despised him, forced to live in a cupboard under the stairs, Harry was the ultimate underdog, and when things finally took a turn for the better, it was more than deserved.
