4. Why Is Argus Filch Employed At Hogwarts?

While Hogwarts is the most bizarre school in the history of education, with the almost constant threat of death looming around every corner, there are still some striking similarities to muggles schools. The house system, choosing specific subjects to study in later years, and having the summer off have all taken inspiration from the muggle world.

Another aspect similar to that of muggle schools is the caretaker, someone to look after and maintain the school throughout the year. In the case of Hogwarts, this job belongs to Argus Filch and his beloved cat Mrs. Norris. But why Filch?

The caretaker is what's known in the wizarding world as a squib, someone from a magical family but with no powers themselves. It makes no sense why Hogwarts would hire someone with no magical abilities to do a job that could be done in literally seconds by someone who does.

At the Burrow, Molly Weasley can be seen utilising magic to wash the dishes. Of course this would have to be on a bigger scale to maintain an entire castle, but the principle is the same. It seems unnecessary to have Filch work and work like this, when surely there is some spell that could have been used when water flooded the corridors during Chamber of Secrets instead of sending poor Argus with a mop and bucket?
