12 Reasons 1985 Was The Most Important Movie Year Ever

6. The Most Irresistible Christmas Movie Ever Came Out

No not Elf, not Miracle On 34th Street and not Home Alone. Santa Claus: The Movie was born out of the twin failures of Superman III and Supergirl and despite the fact that it is easily one of the most memorable Christmas movies of all time, it€™s also just as diabolical as those two launch pads. The sentiment of the film is great, filling in the backstory to Santa€™s mythology, but at times it flirts dangerously with being no more than a chocolate box Coca Cola advert. (That is particularly evident when there€™s a gigantic unavoidable Coke advert in the middle of it.) It is saccharine, twee and poorly written, with only John Lithgow€™s villain performance notable in any way (and he€™s underused horribly) and the effects are bad even by 1985€™s standard. But incredibly - IMPOSSIBLY - attempting to resist it is entirely futile. It€™s like €œLittle Drummer Boy€ by Bing Crosby and David Bowie or eggnog: a completely horrible idea that somehow manages to be both relevant and entertaining while you€™re drunk on Christmas spirit.
