12 Reasons The Star Wars Sequels Aren't As Bad As You Think
9. Three Out Of The Four Main Characters Are Excellent
The Sequel Trilogy was hit-or-miss with original characters. For example, Poe had a strong start in Force Awakens, but he abruptly became pretty annoying in the other two episodes.
Still, this trilogy got three out of the four main characters right, and that's not something to be taken lightly, especially when you consider how bad most of the character development was in the Prequels.
Rey is a pretty great heroine overall. She could've used a little more backstory but for the most part she's an effortlessly likeable and engaging protagonist who really deserves more appreciation from some viewers. Regarding the accusations of her being overpowered, although she did learn the force surprisingly fast two things should be remembered.
Firstly, Rey does have some vulnerabilities in that she's a lonely character with little self-confidence and hardly any friends, so she does have plenty to overcome internally (and this is part of what made her work).
Secondly, when we meet Luke and the young Anakin they're very strong with the force and are brilliant pilots even though they've never left their home planet. It didn't matter then (they were naturally gifted, force-sensitive characters) so why does it matter with Rey?
As for Kylo Ren and Finn, Kylo Ren is a brilliant and complex villain and Finn was also a wonderful, lovable presence. Kylo's motives weren't always clear and Finn didn't get enough to do in Episode IX, but they were still mostly successful characters.
