12 Reasons Why Casablanca is the Greatest Film of All Time

7. Comedy

Yes, Casablanca is one of the great love stories, but it is also quite humorous. The script is filled with subtly comedic lines and looks, a few of which are listed below: When Annina and her husband win at roulette, they tell Louis they will be at his office for their visas the next morning. Jan (Annina's husband) tells Louis "We'll be there at 6:00!" to which Louis responds "I'll be there at 10:00." When Annina asks Rick what type of person Louis is, Rick responds "Oh, he's just like any other man, only more so." The look Rick gives Emil the Croupier after he brings Louis his gambling winnings following the "I'm shocked, shocked..." line is priceless. After Rick tells Louis he came to Casablanca for the waters and Louis explains (unnecessarily) that Casablanca is in the desert, Rick deadpans "I was misinformed." In a precursor to the "Round up the usual suspects." line, Louis is discussing the murder of the German couriers and the missing letters of transit with Major Strasser. Louis tells Strasser that due to the gravity of the situation, he is "...rounding up twice the usual number of suspects." There are many, many more instances such as these throughout the movie. The levity is the ideal counter to the almost overwhelming romance of the film, and in my opinion helped define the modern romantic comedy.
